Test drive: a checklist for buyers

A test drive should last at least 20 minutes and include city streets, a straight road and a faster stretch. Keep the radio off.

Translated from Romanian. These guides describe Romanian rules.

Before you set off

  • Ask whether the insurance covers another driver. Bring your driving licence.
  • Ask for the engine to be cold. A cold start shows the most.
  • Check the warning lights. They should go out after starting.
  • Walk around the car and look under it for leaks.

During the drive

  • The steering should not pull to one side or have a lot of play. On a straight road, hold the wheel lightly and see whether the car keeps its line.
  • The car should brake straight, with no vibration in the pedal and no squealing.
  • Clutch and gearbox: smooth changes, with no jumps or noises. An automatic should not jerk when changing gear.
  • Running gear: thumps and creaks over bumps. Close the windows and turn off the music.
  • Engine: even power, no smoke and no fluctuating revs at idle.

Electronics and equipment

Try the windows, mirrors, lights, wipers, air conditioning and heating, parking sensors and the multimedia system. Small faults can be expensive to repair and are a good argument in negotiation.

After the test drive

  • Look again under the car and under the bonnet. Fresh oil or coolant stains appear only once the engine has warmed up.
  • Check the oil level and colour.
  • If you're set on buying, ask for a diagnostic test. Error codes in the car's computer show hidden problems.

Ask the seller

  • Why they are selling and how long they have had the car.
  • When the last service was and whether they have invoices.
  • How many owners it has had and where it was used.
