Used Volkswagen Passat: what to check before you buy
The Passat is the high-mileage motorway car. A well-kept one lasts a long time, and a neglected one can cost a lot.

Translated from Romanian. These guides describe Romanian rules.
Generations
- B6 (2005–2010)
- B7 (2010–2014)
- B8 (2014–2023)
- B9 (from 2023)
Engines and gearboxes
- 1.8 TSI and 2.0 TSI on the B6 and B7 often use extra oil and have a sensitive timing chain.
- The 2.0 TDI and 1.6 TDI EA189 engines (roughly 2009–2015) were involved in the emissions scandal. Check whether the car received the software update.
- TDI diesels used only in town often have a clogged particulate filter and EGR valve. Ask how the car was driven.
- The oil-bath DSG gearbox (DQ250, DQ381) needs regular oil changes. Ask for proof.
- The electric parking brake on the B6 and B7 is worth trying at the viewing.
What to check at the viewing
- service records and the oil change on the DSG
- mileage, via Vehicle History from the Romanian Auto Registry (RAR) or Auto-Pass on rarom.ro
- interior wear compared with the mileage
- the parking brake and the electronics
- that the car has no lien (Electronic Archive of Security Interests in Movable Property, AEGRM)
