Used Škoda Fabia: what to check before you buy

The Fabia is cheap to run and easy to resell. On older ones, the condition of the engine and body matters most.

Translated from Romanian. These guides describe Romanian rules.

Generations

  • first generation (1999–2007)
  • second generation (2007–2014)
  • third generation (2014–2021)
  • fourth generation (from 2021)

Engines and gearboxes

  • The three-cylinder 1.2 HTP engine (first and second generation) had timing chain problems and uneven running. It should idle quietly.
  • The 1.2 TSI from the second generation (roughly 2010–2014) has a timing chain that can stretch.
  • The 1.0 MPI and 1.0 TSI in the third and fourth generation have a timing belt and rarely have big problems.
  • The three-cylinder 1.4 TDI diesel is economical but noisier. If it was driven in town, check the particulate filter.

What to check at the viewing

  • rust on the wings on the first generation
  • timing noise on a cold start
  • the air conditioning
  • mileage, via Vehicle History from the Romanian Auto Registry (RAR) or Auto-Pass on rarom.ro
  • service history
