ITP: how often it's done and what to check when you buy

The periodic technical inspection (inspecția tehnică periodică, ITP) checks that the car meets the minimum safety standard for the road. When you buy, it tells you only that the car passed a basic test. It says nothing about whether the car is in good shape.

Translated from Romanian. These guides describe Romanian rules.

How often it's done

A new car has its first ITP 3 years after first registration. After that the inspection repeats every 2 years, and for cars older than 12 years it becomes yearly. Taxis and passenger transport have shorter intervals.

The rules can change. Current intervals are on rarom.ro, the website of the Romanian Auto Registry (RAR).

What the ITP checks

The inspector checks the brakes, steering, running gear, lights, tyres, emissions and the condition of the body. The inspection does not assess the general condition of the engine or gearbox, or the accident history.

A valid ITP doesn't mean the car has no problems. It is only the minimum.

What to do when you buy

  • Ask for the ITP record and compare its details with the VIN. You can also check validity for free with the Vehicle History service (Istoric vehicul) on rarom.ro.
  • When the ITP expires, the registration is suspended by law and the car is no longer allowed on the road. Take it to the station on a flatbed.
  • If the ITP expires in a few weeks, factor in possible repairs when you negotiate the price.
  • Don't rely on “it just passed ITP”. Ask what the inspector noted.

Imported cars

A car brought from abroad goes through a check at RAR before registration. Ask RAR whether an inspection done in the country of origin is recognised or has to be redone in Romania. Details in the import guide.
