Used Škoda Octavia: what to check before you buy

The Octavia is roomy, has cheap parts, and many come from import. Some engines and gearboxes need checking before you buy.

Translated from Romanian. These guides describe Romanian rules.

Generations

  • first generation (1996–2010)
  • second generation (2004–2013)
  • third generation (2012–2020)
  • fourth generation (from 2020)

Engines and gearboxes

  • 1.4 TSI and 1.2 TSI with a timing chain (roughly 2007–2012): the chain can stretch. There should be no rattle on a cold start.
  • The 1.8 TSI and 2.0 TSI from the old series (until 2012) often use extra oil.
  • From the third generation, the 1.0, 1.4 and 1.5 TSI petrol engines have a timing belt and give fewer problems.
  • The 7-speed dry-clutch DSG gearbox (DQ200, on the less powerful engines) should shift smoothly, with no jerking when pulling away. Watch for this on the test drive.
  • The 2.0 TDI and 1.6 TDI EA189 engines (roughly 2009–2015) were involved in the emissions scandal. Check whether the car received the software update.
  • TDI diesels used only in town often have a clogged particulate filter and EGR valve. Ask how the car was driven.

What to check at the viewing

  • the service book and timing replacement
  • engine noise on a cold start
  • smooth shifts from the DSG gearbox
  • mileage, via Vehicle History from the Romanian Auto Registry (RAR) or Auto-Pass on rarom.ro
  • the VIN on the car and in the papers
